Biodiversity underpins Earth processes necessary for our own survival: from oxygen supplied by plants to ecosystem engineering by local H&F keystone species like the Eurasian Jay, which distribute tree seeds.

The borough offers a fantastic opportunity to exhibit what urban conservation can look like when space and resources are limited however, natural processes are extremely costly to artificially replicate when nature falters.

Here's how your business can help.

Fund a tiny forest

Trees help clean our air, keep our streets cool, protect against flooding and provide shelter for many animals and insects across Hammersmith & Fulham. But in high temperatures – like we’ve seen in 2022 – they also need our help.

Case study: 600 trees and shrubs have been planted in Hammersmith Park supported by Fever-Tree in partnership with Earthwatch Europe.

Case study: Two more are set to be planted soon in Fulham’s Normand Park and Eel Brook Common funded by a local resident. Primary school pupils from Fulham Prep and Sir John Lillie planted 400 trees. The last 200 were planted by local residents who wanted to take part, including employees of SOBUS, People Arise Now, Fulham Climate Hub and the Friends of Margravine Cemetery.

Please email climate-emergency@lbhf.gov.uk if you have an appropriate site or you would like to get involved.

Fund a pond

The wildlife garden is an area of approximately 0.3ha next to a playground in the north of Ravenscourt Park, with a pond, meadow and woodland. It is potentially a wonderful resource for play, learning and ecotherapy

The project aims to deliver this by enhancing the space with much needed pond renovation, seating areas, interpretation and other improvements. The funding would support the renovation using an eco-cement which has a lower carbon footprint in the long-term and is more resilient.

Organise a litter pick

Litter picking days are part of our sustainability commitments and support the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, which believes every action to protect the environment, no matter how small, makes a difference. Join Hammersmith BID and other local businesses to help keep Hammersmith tidy.

Support Urbanwise

Urbanwise supports the next generation to learn and care about our natural environment. The Centre’s small team has extensive teaching experience with children, young people and adults. The team is also experienced in developing learning materials relating to the local area for all age groups.

For schools, Urbanwise offers a Local Studies programme of education sessions linked to the National Curriculum and a range of environmental projects during the school day. We also offer after school clubs focused on the local environment, sustainable arts and crafts and coding.

The Mudlarks project for children and their families with support from local business is all about helping the River Thames and Grand Union Canal in Borough. The project aims to reduce plastic waste, raise awareness about pollution and help to clean up our waterways.

Get in touch with Urbanwise at learn@urbanwise.london to offer children and young people practical work experience or to get involved with any of their projects.
