What are the social and community infrastructure challenges?

  • Loss of facilities - Hammersmith and Fulham has a wide variety of social and community facilities, however these are increasingly under pressure for change of use or redevelopment.
  • Accessible and inclusive facilities - It is important that community facilities are well located, so that they have maximum accessibility and inclusivity for their potential users.
  • Sports, recreation and play - Safe and stimulating play is essential to childhood development. It can impact positively on physical health, helping to address and prevent obesity.

How can the Local Plan help?

  • Protecting facilities - Establishing policies to require a percentage of affordable workspace units on developments sites and also financial contributions to the provision of affordable workspace.
  • Requiring accessible facilities - Require new or expanded community uses to be designed to meet identified needs and should be of high-quality, safe and inclusive design that provide access for all.
  • Sports, recreation and play - Seeking the retention of existing sports and recreational facilities and supporting development proposals that increase opportunities for play and informal recreation.
