Thank you for responding to the School Street Plus consultation. The Council is currently reviewing all the feedback received to determine which measures are taken forward to improve safety and air quality around Kenmont Primary School. While this review is ongoing, we will not be starting the proposed road closures on 3 June 2024. Please check back here for updates and next steps.

We are working with Kenmont primary school to make school runs safer and the area around the school less polluted for families and residents.

We know that road safety is a major concern, with approximately 20,000 cars passing though the wider neighbourhood every day.

This traffic also creates very poor air quality. Nitrogen dioxide levels outside the school (40µg/m3) are three times higher than the safe pollution limits recommended by the World Health Organization.

Making school runs safer

Working with the school, we are exploring ideas to clean the air around the school, which can include anything from greening measures to new better bike parking and more.

To protect pupils and make it easier to walk and cycle to schools during peak drop-offs and pick-up times, we are also proposing timed road closures on the streets surrounding the school entrance.

So, from 3 June 2024, Valliere Road and a stretch of Kenmont Gardens between Rigeley Road and Ponsard Road, will be closed to motorists from ONLY 8.15am to 9.15am and 3pm to 4pm – and just on school days. The roads will remain open the rest of the time.

Signposting School Streets Plus

Temporary barriers will help signpost and help drivers navigate the initial launch period. The barriers can be moved for exempt drivers as required and will be fully removed outside the timed closures. Safety stewards will be on hand to advise drivers on alternative routes.

Following an initial trial period, we will look to upgrade the scheme with automatic number plate recognition cameras which will not require physical barriers.

Road signage will help advise drivers of the new rules.

Exemptions

The following people are eligible for an exemption and can enter and leave the new School Street Plus at any time:

  • Residents and businesses located on the restricted streets
  • Teachers and school staff
  • Children with mobility issues
  • Carers of vulnerable residents who live on the restricted street

Additionally, blanket exemptions would apply for:

  • Emergency services
  • Local authority school buses
  • Utility providers attending emergencies
  • Bin lorries
  • Postal and courier services

Our safety stewards will be able to assist with entry and exit at each access point. Please speak to them to inform them of your exempt status as required.
