Maternity Champions are trained volunteers who support new mothers (and others with responsibility or caring for new babies). They are part of a wider network and provide a link between mothers and other services in the community.
We have decided to have a review of this service to find out what is going well, what we could improve and whether Maternity Champions are having a positive impact on new mothers.
Maternity Champions aim to:
promote good mental health and wellbeing of mothers using peer to peer and community support
improve health outcomes for babies by supporting mothers with things like breastfeeding and safe sleeping
help promote Public Health messages such as stopping smoking and encouraging immunisations
support the links between mothers and other services in the community such as Health Visitors, Children’s Centres.
This review will hopefully help us improve the service and get a real understanding of how mothers (and others with responsibility for caring with new babies) see the service, how being a Maternity Champion is of benefit to the champions and how we can better use champions to progress our evolving strategy for health and wellbeing and Public Health more broadly.
We invite you to take part in this review by answering a short survey and to offer any further comments you would like us to consider in this review.
