We’ve been working with Melcombe and Kensington Wade Primary Schools to make the streets around the schools safer, healthier, and more welcoming for children and families.
Update 1 September 2025
Initial plans included restricting traffic during school run times to make the roads around Melcombe Primary School and Kensington Wade safer. However, as part of our public consultation, we are bringing the timed road closure trial to a close, and the temporary barriers will be removed at the start of the new academic year.
Although the barriers are being removed, the School Streets Plus programme remains fully committed to creating safer and healthier journeys to school. Together with pupils, parents, and residents, we want to deliver a wider package of Plus measures that improve the local environment and support families to travel actively.
These could include:
Green screens and planting to reduce pollution and make the streets greener 🌱
Better cycling facilities, including scooter and cycle storage at schools, cargo bike parking for parents, and cycle hangars for residents 🚲
Wider pavements and safer crossing points to make walking routes more comfortable and secure 🚸
Traffic calming and safety markings to reduce danger near school gates
Inviting, child-friendly spaces with seating and planting to create a more welcoming school entrance 🌼
By working together, we aim to encourage more families to walk, wheel or cycle as part of their daily journeys, helping to cut congestion, improve air quality, and promote healthier lifestyles.
