Responsible street entertaining, busking and public speaking in Hammersmith Town Centre
To reduce anti-social behaviour and noise pollution, there are rules in place since 2019 which ban the use of all amplifiers across parts of Hammersmith Town Centre.
We do not want to discourage street entertainment or general street noise across Hammersmith Town Centre, however residents, businesses and visitors continue to tell us that the extra noise created by amplifiers causes a disturbance and can, in some instances, be dangerous.
How the restrictions work
We enforce these rules using a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO). The current restrictions in place are:
You are prohibited from using microphones/loudspeakers/megaphones/loud hailers or any other similar equipment designed to amplify the volume of speech or music (except at events authorised by the council).
You are prohibited from using mains electricity or generator power for the purposes of amplification.
The restrictions currently apply to certain parts of Hammersmith Town Centre, (see Appendix 1 map below) which includes the area around the Broadway Centre and the main shopping area of King Street up to the new Civic Campus at Nigel Playfair Avenue.
Why are we consulting?
We need to ensure that the powers for the PSPO are fair and proportionate, so we are asking for your feedback on whether you think there continues to be a problem.
