Wendell Park Primary - School Street Plus
Update - School Streets Plus trial coming to Cobbold Road
We’ve been talking with you about making the roads around Wendell Park Primary School safer, and the wider area greener and cleaner. Thank you to everyone for sharing their thoughts and ideas. Your feedback has helped us shape improvements to your neighbourhood.
Working with Wendell Park Primary School, we will introduce the changes at the start of the new academic year. The changes will be introduced on a trial basis from 2 September 2024, and we welcome your feedback before making any permanent decisions. Please email us at schoolstreets@lbhf.gov.uk to contact us with feedback once the trial begins.
Please see our leaflet and FAQs for more information.
We are working with Wendell Park primary school to make school runs safer and the area around the school less polluted for families and residents.
We know that road safety is a major concern, with approximately 4,000 cars passing though the wider neighbourhood every day.
This traffic also creates very poor air quality. Nitrogen dioxide levels outside the school (29µg/m3) are three times higher than the safe pollution limits recommended by the World Health Organization.
Making school runs safer
Working with the school, we are exploring ideas to clean the air around the school, which can include anything from greening measures to new better bike parking and more.
To protect pupils and make it easier to walk and cycle to schools during peak drop-offs and pick-up times, we are also proposing timed road closures on the road in front of the school entrance.
So from 3 June 2024, a stretch of Cobbold Road between Hartswood Road and Stronsa Road will be closed to motorists from ONLY 8.15am to 9.15am and 2.30pm to 4pm – and just on school days. The road will remain open the rest of the time.
Signposting School Street Plus
Temporary barriers will help signpost and help drivers navigate the initial launch period. The barriers can be moved for exempt drivers as required and will be fully removed outside the timed closures. Safety stewards will be on hand to advise drivers on alternative routes.
Following an initial trial period, we will look to upgrade the scheme with automatic number plate recognition cameras which will not require physical barriers.
Road signage will help advise drivers of the new rules.
