Overview
H&F Council wants to protect nature in our area for years to come. That’s why we plan to make the 'wild side' of Wormwood Scrubs a protected natural space called a Local Nature Reserve. It’s part of our work to tackle the climate and ecological emergency.
What is a 'Local Nature Reserve'?
A Local Nature Reserve is an official protected status for land that's valuable to local wildlife and people.
The government recognises these areas and they get special protection in local planning laws.
They can be designated for a minimum of 30 years, however we propose to designate this land indefinitely.
Right now, we only have one other protected area like this – the woodland around Wormwood Scrubs.
Where will the nature reserve be?
The area that will be designated as a Local Nature Reserve is the ‘meadow’ area which covers about 13 hectares (approximately the same area as 18 football pitches) and is situated in the north-west area of the Scrubs.
It will cover the area stretching from the woodland bordering Old Oak Commmon Lane to the west, to the model aircraft zone to the east.
What will change?
Not much will change in how you can use the area. You can still visit and enjoy it as before.
The main difference is that the land will have stronger legal protection to keep it natural.
You can suggest ways to make it safer and easier to visit, or add educational features such as signage.
